Description: Originally conceived using experiments recorded during a session in August 2016 and then formed over several re-edits afterwards using an ageing cassette tape recorder, 'Texture' brings together soft arrangements and minimalist compositions into a single, low fidelity suite of movements. Across three concise pieces, 'Texture' expresses considered flights through heavily effected electric bass improvisations against a backdrop of languid and subtle tones. Highly recommended.
have yet to translate the song titles so the artist's intentions are somewhat of a mystery to me, but the wavering surface noise creates the theme of a dialogue between music & technology before becoming invisible to my ears. this conjures memories of listening to music as a child (long before the sterility of digital media), when i rarely took notice of the hiss & pops of records, 8-tracks, tapes, & am radio because they were a normal, necessary aspect of recorded sound. nice to be back again. "How Not To Disappear (Completely)" by Pepo Galán is a incredibly relaxing, atmospheric, melancholic, and peaceful ambient music. Some of the best ambient can be found on Rohs! records and it's divisions, and this is another example to that claim. The track "Growing Seed" is my personal favorite by everything is just flawless. This reminds me of daydreams I've had over many summer nights, longing for a special moment that always on the horizon. Beautiful stuff!
Even if he says otherwise, Ian Hawgood is super prolific and incredibly talented in not only his own releases, but in collaborations and with the heart & soul put into the labels he's run over the years.
Saying all that, this is a more recent favorite release of Ian's: peaceful, deceivingly simple (yet not!) piano works that is personal, elegant and graceful in its warmth and presentation. Plus it's for a wonderful cause. Get it!! Joe Borreson
