Description: A couple of years ago Gareth Davis and Ian Hawgood were introduced to one another through their mutual friend Rutger Zuyderveldt. Pretty early on the solemnly attuned duo discovered that they were both huge fans of reel-to-reel tape recording and decided to begin work together on a number of experiments that would eventually become the two tracks included on 'Night Shots'. Gareth kicked off the process creating layers of luscious bass and contrabass clarinet, long takes of delicate textures and improvised melodic lines that were augmented by Ian with interspersed piano, wheezing guitar and tantalising vocals. Dark minimalism, experimental ambience and the seamless integration of some heavily treated field recordings were key objectives too and over a period of about six months they continually developed the pieces within the confines of their respective studios. Ian then played the results through onto new open reels, cutting, live editing and recording 'Mora Rosa' and 'And So' as they came out. A wonderful limited edition 10". It's a keeper.
Even if he says otherwise, Ian Hawgood is super prolific and incredibly talented in not only his own releases, but in collaborations and with the heart & soul put into the labels he's run over the years.
Saying all that, this is a more recent favorite release of Ian's: peaceful, deceivingly simple (yet not!) piano works that is personal, elegant and graceful in its warmth and presentation. Plus it's for a wonderful cause. Get it!! Joe Borreson
I go to sleep listening to this song, and I wake up in a beautiful dream state in the morning. It also helps me focus while I write and work. I was heartbroken when this song disappeared on Spotify, so the hunt began. I must say, this song was very difficult to find, but all the more rewarding when I found it. Jonathan Tilley
