Description: Cut to vinyl in London, England, 'Minimum Maximum' is a minimalist harmonic structure fashioned by electric bass ensemble Minus Pilots. The initial thought for this 10" came about following studies into the theoretical approach to music of indeterminate length examined by John Cage and Morton Feldman but brought to the band's attention by Kenneth Kirschner's intriguing 'Music for Shuffling' works. Of course for 'Minimum Maximum' Minus Pilots were unable to create a record of undefined length due to the clear time restrictions imposed by the vinyl format. This constraint did however lead them to investigate other concepts related to the original idea. The band eventually developed a method enabling them to produce a dynamic composition that minimises musical input whilst maximising musical output. They started by recording about forty sparse tracks using chance procedures and loop-based improvisation techniques. Next the pieces were assessed and either eliminated from consideration or retained for further evaluation until the ten most suitable where left. Each of the remaining loops were then mixed into the left and right listening channels resulting in forty-five distinct thirty second layers of audio which were finally arranged using a non-repeating algorithm. This means that the listener will never actually hear the same pattern or motif together more than once throughout the entire duration of the record. Every version of 'Minimum Maximum' was subject to this sequencing process meaning that each 10" is completely unique. It's a demanding release that we highly recommend is experienced at a low volume through headphones. A quite fascinating sound experiment.
